Handbook for Qualitative Interviews on the Climate-Migration Nexus

  • 9 January 2024
  • WP4

This handbook describes the methodology of database design for qualitative, semi-structured interviews on climate change and migration. It was originally designed to serve as a reference for PIK researchers and their partners working on the project HABITABLE: Linking Climate Change, Habitability and Social Tipping Points, especially the Country Teams and their teams from the six case study countries. This practical handbook has been modified for a wider audience to foster exchange of experience and further refinement in methodologies to research the interactions of environmental change and human mobility. This handbook is intended to have a wider application for qualitative research on environment-migration linkages. It can be a reference point for students, researchers, and practitioners. We encourage others to use our protocol as a template, and refine this methodology to create comparative data in different cases worldwide.

HABITABLE aims to significantly advance our understanding of the current interlinkages between climate impacts and migration and displacement patterns, in order to better anticipate their future evolutions.
